7 Most Popular Markets In Jos

Every shopper would like to spend his or her money on qualitative and affordable products. Whatever is your taste or class, there is hardly any item that you will want to buy from a Nigerian market that cannot be found in at least one of the markets in Jos. In this post, I will be taking you through the seven major markets in Jos, in no particular order, where you can buy any item you want for yourself and loved ones. If you are ready let’s go!

    1. Terminus market

   Located along Murtala Muhammed Way, this is by far the biggest and most popular market in Jos. Here, you can buy all your food stuff, groceries, cloths, shoes, bags, and many other items. Since the main structure of the market was destroyed by fire years ago, trading was decentralized to about three different locations which are not far apart. So you may need to do some walking around  to fully explore the market (which is actually good for your health right?).

    The first area is located beside the former structure that served as the terminus market, just by the roundabout. What is mostly sold here includes all kinds food stuff like fish, meat, rice, garri, yam, vegetables, spices just to mention a few. The second location is after the pedestrian bridge by the right. Here you can find a storey building with shops that sell groceries and provisions of all kind. The third location is right behind the second location. Just like the first location, what is mainly sold here is food stuff.

2. Railway market

Further down Murtala Muhammed Way, close to the Nigerian Railway Corporation, is the Railway market. Here, you can find boutiques to buy your clothes, shoes, bags, belts, sunglasses and so many other related items.

3. Rwang Pam street

Are you wondering where you can buy stuff like computers, books and other educational materials? Rwang Pam street is the best location for such kind of things. If you are coming from the Plateau Riders axis, it is located two streets before terminus. Here, you will not only find several bookshops and computer shops, but you will also find stores where computer hardware and software maintenance is carried out.

4. GSM market (Hamaz)

 Located on Ahmadu Bello Way, which is just a street before terminus market, this market is popularly known as Hamaz. Trust me, there is hardly any phone model that you are looking for that you won’t find here. If you like shopping in superstores like There is also a superstor along this street called Onigbinde storesAlso, several commercial banks have their branches along this street.

5. Daily market

Located in Gada biyu area of Jos, you can find all sorts of food stuff, soup ingredients, fish, meat and much more. One thing I love so much about this market is that you can find exotic soup ingredients such as periwinkles and snail for making delicacies like edikaiko, afang, olubo and ofe nsala. This way, you don’t have to miss home so much if you are from the south-south and south eastern part of Nigeria.

6. Tomato market

This market is located in Farin Gada. It is the biggest market in plateau state when it comes to vegetables like tomatoes, pepper, onions, and other food crops like tubers (irish potatoes, sweet potatoes and yam), beans, millet, wheat and corn, etc. that are cultivated in the northern part of the country. Because these items are sold in large quantities here, you will get some of them such as tomatoes, onions and irish potatoes at a cheaper rate.

7. Katako market

Last but not the least is the Katako market, which is located in Laranto. Here, we have the biggest wood market in Plateau state and the biggest second hand cloths and shoes market in the state. But of major interest to me and probably to you is the second hand cloths and shoes market. The unique thing about the clothes and shoes from this market is that they are affordable, durable and highly fashionable. If you are a fashionable and classy person but you don’t want to spend too much money to maintain your lifestyle, then trust me when I say that you will love this market.

On a final note, I would like to offer some piece of advice as you go for shopping in these markets. Just like it is with every other Nigerian market, try to be smart and vigilant when you visit any of these markets. For example, just like in all GSM markets in Nigeria, you have to be very observant when you go to buy a phone. Please don’t buy from people standing along the road as they may sell to you stolen products.
